Ann M. Bergart

Ann M. Bergart, PhD, LCSW, is retired associate professor, School of Social Work, College of Professional Studies, Aurora University. She caught the group work “bug” while in graduate school—from her 2nd-year field instructor and another staff member, both of whom understood and loved group work—and never looked back. After receiving her master’s degree she worked in family service agencies where she received training in various forms of social work with groups and later trained others. She began teaching courses in group work, as well as other subjects, to social work students in 1989. In 1997 she received her doctorate from the University of Chicago. Currently she is an adjunct instructor in group work at Loyola University Chicago and the University of Chicago. She has conducted in-service training workshops and consultations in group work in several local agencies, and has taught in continuing education programs at the University of Chicago and Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Bergart has published numerous articles and this is the second volume of collected works she has edited. For many years she has served on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) and is the founder of the IASWG Group Work Camp, a biennial event which offers intensive experiential training and emphasizes the purposeful use of activities in group work practice.
