Sexual Health, Gender Role Identity and Parental Absence

&

ABSTRACT

An estimated 35% of American children are currently being raised in parent-absent homes. Because many of these absences take place during pivotal times in a child's development, there may be many untoward effects on a child's gender role identity and healthy sexual development. Reasons for parental absence are reviewed and their specific effects on sexual identity and development are discussed. Several recommendations are made regarding the prevention of negative influences on children from parent-absent homes.
