Abstract
“Normal” sexual behavior is anything which we and the society within which we function make it, and in essence boils down to socially acceptable and culturally learned behavior. Human cultures set up codes of conduct, and criteria of sex normality. By reinforcing and rewarding the appropriate behaviors, individuals become socialized into what is considered healthy, well-adjusted, mature sex. Underlying the rules and regulations governing sexual behavior, are the goals, values and beliefs of a specific society. These in turn influence attitudes toward sexual behavior and interpersonal relationships. Examination of primitive cultures and understanding the way in which dominant influences permeate relationships and give rise to specific attitudes about sex and sexual behavior illustrate this fact. This discussion will include the following relevant topics: attitudes toward sex, sex instruction, premarital intercourse and illegitimacy, courtship practices, marriage customs, relationships between family members, puberty rites, rites of passage and initiation ceremonies, superstitions, and homosexuality.
