Hurdles: An Activity for Homosexuality Education

&
Pages 198-203 | Published online: 21 Jan 2015

Abstract

An activity designed to elucidate the various and conflicting processes of coming out is described. Hurdles are used as an analogy for the obstacles individuals face in coming out. Activity participants are given an opportunity to role-play the decision to come out and to challenge their beliefs about the simplicity of this process. Both college students and participants in professional training seminars report increased understanding and empathy for the daily “hurdles” faced by gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals. The activity may be of particular benefit for homosexual youth.
