Abstract

In this article the authors present an overview of a model for raising awareness and changing attitudes of counselors and other professionals toward the needs of gay/lesbian/bisexual (GLB) individuals. Based on Prochaska's transtheoretical model of change (Prochaska, J. O., Norcross, J. C., and DiClemente, C. C. [1994]. Changing for good: The revolutionary program that explains the six stages of changes and teaches you how to free yourself from bad habits. New York: W. Morrow.), the training model is designed to promote growth in individuals who are at a variety of levels of readiness for change, as well as consolidating and maintaining change in individuals who have already achieved significant growth in relation to GLB concerns. Finally, the authors present specific exercises that meet the needs of participants in each stage of Prochaska's change model. The discussion contends that when exercises are geared toward specific stages of change, movement through the stages of change can be enhanced.
