Psychosocial Consequences of Penectomy Following Carcinoma of the Penis

&
Pages 39-41 | Published online: 21 Jan 2015

Abstract

A 42-year-old separated male underwent a total penectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. Although he initially denied any distress regarding the procedure, he began to abuse substances and eventually became homeless. Rehabilitation for substance abuse was followed by total penile reconstruction. The phases of psychotherapy in this case are reviewed. Formal psychotherapy is recommended for patients with such a dramatic amputation.
