A Curriculum for Training Professionals in Human Sexuality Using the Sexual Attitude Restructuring (SAR) Model

Pages 26-32 | Published online: 21 Jan 2015

Abstract

It is important for health professionals to understand their own attitudes, feelings, and judgments about sexuality, have a basic knowledge of the issues involved, and develop the necessary skills for addressing the concerns of the patient, client, or student. The health professional must be aware of any trauma, ignorance, or secretiveness that could block offering skillful and helpful information or advice. The implosion model of training, including the use of explicit films, small group discussion, and informational lectures, is suggested as an acceptable and reliable way of helping professionals to reassess their own attitudes about various aspects of sexuality, lower any anxiety about sexual activities, and become comfortable with the subjects that comprise the field of human sexuality. The Sexual Attitude Restructuring (SAR) experience can make a student more educable, so that knowledge building and skill development can occur naturally within a learning environment. Such a learning environment is described for the training of the professional person.
