Preventive and Remedial Boundaries Training for Helping Professionals and Clergy: Successful Approaches and Useful Tools

Abstract

Concern about the prevention of sexual misconduct by professionals in various helping fields has led to an examination of boundaries in the professional relationship. Professional training programs, however, have not for the most part developed training based on what is known about professional boundary violations. Organized psychology, in particular, has developed little given the prevalence and cost of the problem of sexual misconduct. This paper reviews training aids and tools developed in a number of fields which can be utilized in the training of professionals in a wide range of helping fields. There are a large number of videotapes and training packages available which can be utilized in developing training for health professionals at all levels of sophistication. Many such tools from around the world, but in the English language, are identified with information concerning their purchase.
