Abstract
The cube law, which has a history of several decades,1 may be stated as follows. Consider a two-party system and suppose that the representatives of the two parties are elected according to a single-member district system. Then the ratio of the numbers of representatives elected is approximately equal to the third power of the ratio of the national votes obtained by the two parties. The objective of this note is to provide a theoretical argument which predicts the mathematical form of this relationship.
