A surveillance system for congenital malformations in single and multiple hospitals is described. The system is comparable to the cusum technique with regard to the period in which data calling for alarm are gathered, but involves shorter periods of time for data processing. The required calculations are simple and thus can be carried out by the local staff of a hospital.
