Notes

1. The average depth of the Baltic Sea is about 50 meters compared with the Mediterranean's 1500 meters. Only 3% of the water (by volume) is exchanged each year, so it takes more than 30 years for a total exchange.

2. Today it includes the following contracting parties: Denmark, Estonia, the European Community, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

3. It does not come as a surprise that the theoretical approach provided by European political scientists of ‘regime analysis’ (see List Citation1991) in political science was forged against the background of case studies drawn from the environmental sector of Baltic Sea cooperation.
