1. The engineers told me that they had white helmets because, if there were an accident or critical situation in the mine, everyone would see the highly visible helmet of the manager or engineer and turn to them for further instructions. The workers said that engineers had white helmets because they would then be highly visible from a distance so that, if one saw a white helmet, one could get back to work or put out a cigarette, as smoking was forbidden in the mine.
