Pages 81-89 | Received 01 Dec 1977, Published online: 21 Nov 2008

Abstract

In the Lingue estuary (Valdivia, Chile) Perinereis gualpensis has been found from the mixo‐oligo‐haline to the euhaline zone, although this polychaete has been described by Jeldes (1963) as a typical freshwater species, while Perinereis vallata was found to be restricted to the euhaline zone of this estuary, well separated in habitat from the former species. To make sure the sympatric existence of two species of one and the same genus, these two polychaetes have been redescribed and compared on the basis of morphological differences (shape of the paragnaths, area VI), meristical (number of segments in relation to body length and number of paragnaths) and morfometrical (length of the antennae relative to the length of the palpi). Furthermore, these investigations have shown that P. vallata cannot be considered as a variety of P. nuntia.
