Oocyte membrane preparations of Locusta migratoria specifically bind locust vitellogenin. The binding process is saturable with a K d value of 1 X 10−7 M. Its pH optimum is between 7.0 and 7.4. The binding of vitellogenin is sensitive to EGTA. The binding component can be destroyed by heating to 80° C or by treatment with pronase or trypsin. The binding reaction is further characterized with respect to effect of time and temperature of incubation.
