Plasmodesmata and ingrowths of chalazal wall in megasporogenesis in an orchid Epipactis

Pages 171-173 | Published online: 08 Feb 2017

Summary

The chalazal part of the wall in Epipactis meiocyte, dyad, and tetrad consists of two layers. The inner layer containing callose is perforated by about 150–200 ingrowths of the outer noncallose layer. About 150 plasmodesmata cross the chalazal wall, but no plasmodesmata were noticed elsewhere in the meiocyte wall. It is assumed that differentiated chalazal wall plays a role in the polarization of meiocyte and the formation of a large functional megaspore at the chalazal part of the tetrad.
