Fertilization in spinach: the pathway of the pollen tubes in the style

&
Pages 243-247 | Published online: 08 Feb 2017

Summary

The style of spinach has a central core of relatively small, closely packed cells with intercellular spaces filled with an electrondense substance. The transition from the stigma to the style is not sharp. After pollination the first pollen tubes grow through the intercellular spaces. The following ones can grow intercellular as well as inside the cell walls, i. e. between the cell wall and the plasmamembrane. The penetrated cells degenerate in favour of the growing pollen tubes.
