Abstract
In this review mineral nutrients of plants are considered in three categories of mobility in the phloem ‐ mobile nutrients, immobile nutrients and nutrients of variable mobility. Changes in the activity and direction of translocation in the phloem are discussed in relationship to leaf age from adolescence to senescence. Typical patterns of change in leaf nutrient content with increasing age of the leaf are described for phloem mobile nutrients (e.g. N, P, K), phloem immobile nutrients (e.g. Ca) and nutrients of variable phloem mobility (e.g. Cu, S). The patterns for a single leaf are extended to patterns of change in nutrient distribution in whole tops during their lives. The effects of physiological and environmental factors, e.g. sink size and nutrient supply, on the remobilization of nutrients are also considered. The factors determining the phloem mobility of a nutrient are discussed briefly to place into perspective the final section of the review, which discusses the relationship of leaf senescence to the remobilization of nutrients from leaves.
