Abstract

Two methods for the determination of total N content in plant tissue were compared for precision and sensitivity. Two National Bureau of Standards (NBS) plant tissue samples (Tomato and Pine), and three of unknown nitrogen content were analyzed using the Antek Chemiluminescent Nitrogen Analyzer System and a Kjel‐Foss Automated Kjeldahl System. Samples were tested at two time periods for both systems. The Kjeldahl system was found to be more precise than the Antek system, although precision for the Antek system was well within acceptable limits. Precision over time was also better for the Kjeldahl system. Similar values were obtained for both systems at each of two test periods. In a second experiment, three sample particle sizes were compared using the Antek unit. As particle size decreased, total N content, as determined by the Antek unit increased, while precision decreased. Antek sample introduction containers (quartz boats) also had an effect on precision.
