Improved root growth and water uptake in the epic model

Abstract

A root growth submodel and water uptake per unit length of root were incorporated into the Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC). Ability of the new model to simulate growth of the root system of a dryland cotton crop was evaluated and reasonable predictions were obtained. Model results were very sensitive to the required input of length to weight ratio. Effects of bulk density on root growth were overestimated by the model algorithms.
