The Effect of Halomethane Impurities on Ozone Generation from Oxygen in DC Negative Corona Discharge

Abstract

The effect of the halomethanes CC1₂F₂, CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃ and CCl₄ on the production of ozone using oxygen feed gas in a negative corona discharge has been investigated experimentally. The fall in the product ozone yield was found to increase with increasing number of halogen atoms substituted in methane molecule. A detailed description of the role of these halogen species in the chemistry of the discharge is given.
