In 1973 Dr. Rip Rice, Myron E. Browning and others organized “The First International Symposium on Ozone for Water and Wastewater Treatment” held December 2–5, 1973 in Washington, DC. At this conference, the formation of the International Ozone Association (IOA)occurred. This event was organized in the timeframe of when the U.S. Congress was in the process of passing the Safe Drinking Water Act.
This 1st Ozone World Congress was a resounding success with nearly 400 in attendance! The IOA (initially called the International Ozone Institute) was formed on Monday, December 3, 1973. The IOA returned to Washington for the 6th World Congress in 1983.
Now, 34 years later, the IOA will again return to Washington, DC on August 13–17, 2017 for the 23rd IOA World Congress. The event will be held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The Gaylord National Resort is a small city into itself with a complete complement of activities and dining venues. A trolley service is available to travel into the center of Washington for touring.
The Congress organizers have developed a very comprehensive program including:
Three days of technical presentations
Sunday workshop focused on ozone design and operation
Exhibit hall with leading manufacturers of ozone technology and equipment
Networking opportunities to learn more about ozone process applications
Technical tour to learn more about other ozone installations and applications
Opening welcome reception, exhibitor reception and conference reception
The conference will be opened with a keynote address by Dr. Charles B. Bott, director of water technology and research at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) in southeast Virginia, where he currently is managing research and development efforts for HRSD’s thirteen wastewater treatment plants (2.5 M p.e. combined capacity) and collection system. The title of his address will be “Hampton Roads Sanitation District’s (HRSD) Vision for Managed Aquifer Recharge in Eastern Virginia: Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT).”
This conference will have a large international presence with major support from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Japan. It will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest in ozone technologies and to obtain a world-view perspective.
Come join your colleagues in this not-to-be-missed World Congress! We look forward to seeing you there.
