Preparation of 0-Dodecyl Sucrose Surfactant

ABSTRACT

0-dodecyl sucrose was prepared by reacting sucrose with dodecyl bromide in the presence of sodium stearate and sodium hydroxide in propylene glycol using the microemulsion technique previously applied in the preparation of sucrose esters. The reaction yielded 43% 0-dodecyl sucrose: 27% di-ether, 15% mono-ether and 1% unreacted sucrose.

0-dodecyl sucrose was also prepared by reacting monododecyl sulfate with sodium sucrate in the presence of sodium stearate in propylene glycol. The yield was 59% dodecyl stearate and 22% di-o-dodecyl sucrose. The reaction of monododecyl sulfate with sodium sucrate dissolved in propylene glycol gave 11% tetra-o-dodecyl sucrose.

Surface and interfacial tensions, and critical micelle concentration of 0-dodecyl sucrose aqueous solutions were measured to establish the product's surface activity.
