ABSTRACT
Phase diagram, interfacial tension and structural properties of the water - tetradecane - propanol - sodium chloride system have been investigated. Phase behavior of this system shows similarities with those of the pseudo quaternary systems containing a surfactant : brine-surfactant-cosurfactant-oil. In the three-liquid phase region, a single relationship between γlm interfacial tensions and one variable of composition (e.g. the water concentration in the middle phase) is established ; likewise, a similar relationship is evidenced between γmu and the considered variable of composition. It is found that Antonoff's rule holds through the whole of the three-phase region. Ultralow γlm interfacial tension (< 10−5m N/m) are achieved as compositions of lower and middle phases are close to that of the critical end point. 1H NMR investigation indicates that structure of the middle phases is very Bimilar to that of the binary water-propanol mixtures in the same range of concentration. This study does not show any evidence of a micellar aggregate state of propanol in the quaternary mixtures.
