PHOSFHATIDYLCHOLINE-CEREBBOSIDE INTERACTIONS: FORCE CHARACTERISTICS

ABSTRACT

We used x-ray diffracion and the osmotic force technique to determine the character of the net force acting between dioleoylphosphatidylcholine bilayers containing a glycolipid, cerebrosides. We found the hydration force acting between bilayers of this mixed lipid system to be relatively unchanged as compared with DOPC bilayers alone. The van der Waals force increased as the concentration of eerebrosides increased. The electrostatic force, due to adsorption of Ca2+ to DOPC, was only apparent after the lipid mixture underwent the gel-liquid crystalline phase transition at a molar ratio greater than 4.7 DOPC/lcerebroside.
