THE STABILITY OK OIL/WATER EMULSIONS CONTAINING MAGNETITE IN THE OIL PHASE PART 1:EFFECT OF MAGNETIC ATTRACTIVE ENERGY

Pages 145-168 | Published online: 27 Apr 2007

ABSTRACT

The stability of o/w emulsions containing magnetite dispersed in the oil phase has been studied. It was found that the stability of such emulsions was lower than that for emulsions not containing magnetite, when the oil phase was emulsified in aqueous SDS solution following the addition of a 1-1 type electrolyte.

The potential energy between two globules was calculated using a spherical mono magnetic, dispersed particles model. From this theoretical consideration,it is possible to understand the reason why the stability of o/w emulsion is reduced by the addition of magnetite.

The stabilities of both magnetite containing and magnetite free emulsions were essentially the same in the presence of the polymeric emulsifying agent, PVA.
