ABSTRACT

Solubilization data have been obtained for some carboxymethyl ethoxylated surfactant systems exhibiting ultralow interfacial tension under extremely high calcium ion concentration (0.5-1.5 M). These surfactant systems were prepared from Hiils B433 surfactant sample containing carboxymethyl ethoxylated anionic and ethoxylated nonionic surfactant with an average ethylene oxide number of A.5, Heavy crude oil was added to the surfactant solutions containing varying amounts of CaCl2- and surfactant. The solubilization experiment was followed by turbidity and UV measurements. Results obtained by both methods agree quite well for the same solubilization system. For comparing the results from different systems, the turbidity method seemed to give more reasonable comparison. Solubilization characteristics depends strongly on the surfactant and calcium ion concentrations. It changes substantially around 0.02% surfactant concentration. Micellar size measured by laser light scattering indicated that the size is larger at surfactant concentration below 0.03%. It seems that a good solubilizer can be obtained in the surfactant solution when the micellar size is around 100 nm.
