THE GEOMETRY OF DROP DISTORTION

Pages 261-271 | Published online: 28 Mar 2007

ABSTRACT

Since geometry has been shown to play a significant part in the behavior of emulsions, a series of calculations have been made to determine the increase in area of a spherical drop when it is deformed into an oblate or prolate spheroid. The results may be of use in designing dispersion machinery

Many commercial emulsions are made by preparing an initial coarse dispersion and then subjecting the mixture to further processing to reduce particle size. It is well understood that small and uniform particle size can contribute to the stability of an emulsion. Several techniques can be used among
