Preparation of Vesicles from Hydrotrope Solutions

ABSTRACT

Vesicles were prepared by dilution with water of hydrotrope (sodium xylene sulfonate) solutions for a nonionic surfactant Laureth 4 (Brij® 30).

The results showed the sodium xylene sulfonate (SXS) to solubilize the nonionic surfactant to a high degree, 40% by weight, into an isotropic solution. The vesicle dispersions prepared by dilution contained 3.2% by weight of the nonionic surfactant in equilibrium with an aqueous continuous phase of only 0.4% SXS and 0.04% Laureth 4. Their stability was superior to vesicles formed by dispersing the lamellar liquid crystal directly.
