Transpersonal group psychotherapy: Theory, method, and community

Abstract

Transpersonal group psychotherapy is a carpet of theory, technique, and experience woven from threads of contemporary psychology, mysticism, and a perennial philosophy many centuries old. Transpersonal ideas have influenced religion, art, music, architecture, government, and commercial institutions. As they influence psychology, their goal remains as always: the development of the ability in human beings to perceive directly and intuitively the reality that underlies the world of appearances. The purpose of this article is to introduce the basic concepts of transpersonal psychology, to propose a model of transpersonal group psychotherapy, to discuss the training of transpersonal group leaders, and to delineate how this model relates to building and maintaining community.
