SUMMARY

This article includes a very brief discussion of our history as a profession, followed by some brief definitions of the terminology that is often used interchangeably in library education and the field, an explanation of what competency means, and concludes with a discussion of the essential competencies that all 21st century information professionals must master, in order to be successful.
