NICK R. SMITH is an assistant professor of architecture and urban studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. His work explores the politics of urbanization and planning in Asia, including his recently published book, The End of the Village: Planning the Urbanization of Rural China (2021, University of Minnesota Press).
