SYNOPTIC ABSTRACT

It is shown that for two (or more) tests of hypotheses for normal means, if type I errors and total maximum sample size are fixed, the usual procedure of applying fixed sample-size tests individually is inadmissible with respect to type II errors for certain simple alternatives, being dominated by a sequential design.
