SYNOPTIC ABSTRACT
We consider the general case of a two-unit standby system, with nonidentical units, which alternatively play the role of the operating unit, while the other one is either under repair, or on standby. Using Gamma distributions, the approximate values of the point availability function A(t) of the system can be conveniently computed, as well as those of other performance measures for the system. The theoretical results obtained here contain several well-known results as special cases.
