CYBERNETIC APPROACH TO GLOBAL AND LOCAL MODE OF ACTION OF GENERAL ANESTHETICS

Pages 143-150 | Received 01 Mar 1978, Published online: 27 Mar 2007

Abstract

This paper discussed how general anesthetics globally depress the patterned structurally stable stochastic electric activity of the brain. Locally they fluidize cell membranes. This disordering reduces lateral interactions in the membrane and reduces membrane current flicker noise. Neuronal fluctuations arc reduced. This local effect produces the global effect.
