Abstract
The concept of a fuzzy set has been applied to human cognition, communication, decision making, economics, engineering systems analysis, control, and other areas.
In the area of pattern description, a house, a house with high roof, and a church are used as illustrative examples. Other illustrative examples include leukocytes, chromosomes, faces, pancreas, geometric figures, and other patterns.
In the area of pattern classification and recognition, a chromosome image can be classified as an „approximate median chromosome,” „approximate submedian chromosome,” or „approximate acrocentric chromosome.”
In the area of pattern storage, effective ways to store geometric figures and chromosome images so that fuzzy queries can be answered efficiently are presented.
In the area of pattern retrieval, how to answer triangle related fuzzy queries such as „retrieve the triangles which are very similar to isosceles triangles but not similar to given triangle,” and chromosome related fuzzy queries such as „retrieve the chromosomes which are more or less similar to median chromosomes and very very similar to a given chromosome” are also presented.
