Flake Concentrations: Distinguishing Between Flintworking Activity Areas and Secondary Deposits

Pages 9-16 | Published online: 06 Sep 2016

Abstract

Identification of archaeological chipping debris concentrations as either flintworking activity areas (primary concentrations) or redeposited dumps (secondary concentrations) is possible through a quick and simple analytical technique. Size grading by sieving through a series of nested screens followed by the calculation of a ratio of flakes in the two smallest screens provides unambiguous criteria for the identification of archaeological concentrations.
