An Experiment in Natural Fracture

Abstract

Cobbles and angular chunks of obsidian were subjected to breakage by being sent through the mail. The resulting assemblages of “flakes” and “cores” were analyzed to evaluate various criteria for distinguishing natural fracture from intentional stone knapping.
