Abstract
Experimental reproduction of stemmed bifaces has resulted in the recognition of a distinctive but previously undescribed flake type - the biface notching flake. This flake type is described, and examples of its occurrence in archaeological contexts are presented Because biface notching flakes are the result of a specific tool manufacturing activity, their identification in debitage assemblages can provide valuable information regarding the nature and spatial arrangement of intra-site stoneworking activities, as well as changing patterns of site usage through time.
