ABSTRACT

Flaked stone analysis is complex and, if the maximum Information is to be obtained, should contain several different approaches, including typological, technological, and functional ones. Flaked stone technology is discussed in terms of three technological rules and the concept of technological necessity. The mechanical properties of brittle fracture are differentiated from technological analysis. An assemblage of archaeological flaked stone artifacts from the High Arctic site of Johova are analyzed to demonstrate an approach to flaked stone technological analysis. The process of analysis is described, and the materials illustrated. A single functional form, and the single technology used to produce it, are identified and described.
