The Experimental Replication of a Stone Mortar

Pages 116-123 | Published online: 25 Aug 2016

Abstract

Loose mortars of stone were found and used on occasion by all the tribes, but the universal testimony is that they were not made. In fact, the Chukchansi declare their Inability to do so, and attribute all stone mortar holes, in situ, as well as portable, to the coyote, who employed an agency of manufacture that decency debars from mention [Kroeber 1925:528].
