Abstract
Evidence from Akrotiri Aetokremnos shows that hunter-gatherers visited Cyprus before the Neolithic period, but the first colonization of the island took place during the Aceramic Neolithic (7000-5500B.C.) phase. This phase is known for the distinctive groundstone bowls, tools, and ornaments found at sites such as Khirokitia Vouni. Kalavassos Tenta. and Rizokarpaso Cane Andreas Kastros. rather than their "mediocre" chipped stone assemblages (Knapp 1994: 405), but classification and study of the latter artifacts can provide insights into the settlement dynamics of prehistoric Cyprus. This paper reports on the lithic assemblage from several possible Aceramic Neolithic (AN) sites from the Malloura Valley in central Cyprus. We identify several traits which may be diagnostic of an AN assemblage.
