Mapping of Executive Functions / Cartografía de las Funciones Ejecutivas

Abstract

This theoretical review attempts to carry out an overview of the concept of Executive Functions, exposing various facets emerging from the latest scientific developments, so that novice readers can begin to learn about the subject and those who are already familiar with it can update their knowledge. The review begins by explaining what is meant by Executive Functions and why they are important. Following that, we review both the components and the concepts commonly used in the literature that are directly related to Executive Functions. Finally, we review their precursors and those environmental factors that influence their development.

Resumen

En esta revisión teórica se intenta mostrar un panorama general sobre el concepto de Funciones Ejecutivas, mostrando diversas aristas a partir del desarrollo científico más reciente, con el fin de que aquellos lectores nóveles puedan introducirse en el tema o aquellos que ya se encuentran familiarizados, puedan actualizar sus conocimientos. Se comienza explicando qué se entiende por Funciones Ejecutivas y por qué son importantes. Luego, se revisan tanto sus componentes clásicos, como aquellos conceptos utilizados comúnmente en la literatura que se relacionan directamente. Por último, se revisa cuáles son los precursores y aquellos elementos ambientales que influyen en su desarrollo.
