Generalizacion de Una Clasificacion Cognitivo Dimensional de Episodios de Ayuda A Una Muestra EspañOla

Generalizing a cognitive-dimensional classification of helping behavior to a Spanish sample

Pages 7-22 | Published online: 29 Apr 2014

Abstract

It is argued that the social psychological literature on altruism lacks an organizing framework that interrelates the various forms of helping. The Smithson, Pearce and Amato's researches (1980–1983) dealing with a dimensional taxonomy of helping episodes in Australian samples are described in this work. We try to confirm the outcomes of such researches and to generalize the taxonomy to a Spanish universitary sample. Multidimensional scaling analyses suggest a stable bidimensional structure of helping despite national differences. These dimensions are: planned-spontaneous help and serious-non serious help. Moreover, there are two more dimensions, although difficult to interpret. There are some cultural differences about the localization of helping episodes in these dimensions. Some hypotheses to explain these differences are suggested.
