Abstract

The present study reports an experiment on minority direct and indirect influence. Three variables were considered: (a) degree of conflict induced by minority's rhetoric, (b) dependency or independence of majority judgments, and (c) consequences of the attitude change. According to the model of disassociation between comparison and validation, results showed that minority influence increases as a function of the conflict induced by the minority, when judges are independent. On the other hand, minority direct influence is inhibited and becomes indirect when social costs of attitude change increases.
