Preparing Teachers for Pastoral Care in Singapore Schools

ABSTRACT

This paper traces the development of a special training programme introduced recently at the Institute of Education to prepare teachers for their pastoral care role in the schools. Courses are organized at three levels to provide breadth and depth in training and to address the training needs of the classroom teachers who are the frontline pastoral care-givers as well as the key personnel holding leadership positions in the pastoral care setup. The rationale, content and format of the training programme are described and, a comparative study made of the effectiveness of the three approaches used, namely school-based, campus-based school-focussed and open enrollment.
