Development and Calypso Culture: Caribbean Roots and Canadian Transformations

ABSTRACT

The first part of this paper argues that the definition of “development” as used by the philosophers Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen can frame an understanding of the national culture of the musical art form, the calypso, in Trinidad. The second half of the paper discusses the migration of the calypso musical form to Toronto, where it becomes limited to being part of a minority, immigrant ethnic culture. Yet, many of the problems that it faces in Trinidad, such as insufficient radio play and lack of state support, are the same in Toronto, suggesting that a wider shared problem with commodification and the incursion of market values is challenging development. I argue that the structure of choices for calypsonians is different in Canada and that this will determine, to some degree, the nature of the culture and the human development it makes possible.

RÉSUMÉ

Dans la première partie de cet article, l'auteure fait valoir que la définition du terme «développement», telle qu'utilisée par les philosophes Martha Nussbaum et Amartya Sen, peut servir de cadre à une compréhension du calypso en tant que forme d'art musical jouant un rôle culturel national à Trinité. La seconde partie de l'article porte sur la migration de cette forme d'art musical à Toronto, où sa diffusion a été limitée à un groupe ethnique minoritaire d'immigrants. Cependant, nombre des problèmes qui existent à Trinité concernant le calypso, comme une diffusion insuffisante sur les ondes radiophoniques et un manque de soutien de l'État, s'observent également à Toronto, ce qui donne à penser qu'un problème partagé à largé échelle, s'accompagnant d'une réification et d'une introduction des valeurs marchandes, nuit au développement. L'auteure suggère que la structure des choix pour les adeptes du calypso est différente au Canada et que cela déterminera, jusqu'à un certain point, la nature de la culture et du développement humain rendu possible.
