ABSTRACT
The implementation of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) of Turkey involves, among other activities aimed at integrated. regional socioeconomic development, irrigation of vast land areas. Water is a most important resource in GAP and its rational use is the goal in the development and management of the region? water and soil resources. Irrigation is one of two main competing uses of water in the project (the other is hydroelectric energy).
In this paper, regulation of water in large irrigation canals in Turkey is analyzed and a solution is sought for the largest irrigation canal in GAP— also now the largest in Turkey. Several alternatives are assessed for the Harran canal, which is 118 km in length with a carrying capacity of 80 m 3/s. The alternatives. with varying degrees of sophistication of hydraulics and management, are analyzed according to their economic und operational merits; a solution with a mixed regulation approach is rated as best suited.
The selected solution is now being applied to the construction of the Harran canal.
