Pages 135-139 | Published online: 22 Jan 2009

ABSTRACT

This article reviews the present framework for water management in Mexico. Efforts are being made to operationalize the concept of sustainable development, through more effective implementation of both institutional and legal practices and policies. Basin councils are being established to ensure that national and regional needs are met.

This would contribute to more efficient water quantity and quality, management by explicitly taking care of the needs of the users and the environment.
