The Article of the Year 2015

The Editors of Tourism Recreation Research (TRR) extend their congratulations to Professor Betty Weiler and Dr Rosemary Black for winning the Article of the Year Award 2015 for their joint contribution, The changing face of the tour guide: One-way communicator to choreographer to co-creator of the tourist experience, published in TRR Volume 40, No.3, 2015, pp. 364–378. The judges ranked it high for its originality and practical usability of research.

Betty Weiler holds a PhD from the University of Victoria (Canada) and is Professor and Director of Research in the School of Business and Tourism at Southern Cross University (Australia). Her 150+ publications, many in top-tier international tourism research journals, have centred on the tourist experience, and she is one of the world's leading scholars on the role of the tour guide. Betty is particularly well known for her contribution to visitor management and communication in protected areas, zoos and heritage attractions, and more recently on research aimed at influencing visitors' on-site and post-visit behaviour. She is also a multi-award winning PhD supervisor and an editorial board member of six international tourism journals.

Rosemary Black holds a PhD from Monash University and is Associate Professor in Interpretation and Ecotourism at Charles Sturt University in Australia. She teaches and undertakes research in sustainable tourism, tour guiding, heritage interpretation, sustainable behaviours and adventure tourism. Prior to becoming an academic she worked in protected area management, adventure travel, and community conservation. She has published six books and more than 50 refereed publications. Rosemary undertakes applied research with industry partners including protected area management, tourism agencies and community-based organizations. She is on the editorial board of two international tourism journals and recently co-authored Tour Guiding Research: Insights, Issues and Implications.
