Acknowledgements

I would like to acknowledge the authors of conference papers for the contributions they made at the conference and, thereby, to this publication. They are: Brown Maaba, Wilfred Mhanda, Martha Akawa, Elias Tarimo, Christian Williams, Drew Thompson, Steve Davis, Godfrey Maringira, Suren Pillay, Noëleen Murray and Leslie Witz. Also, Patricia Hayes, Premesh Lalu, Nicky Rousseau, Paolo Israel and Brian Raftopolous all deserve special thanks for their contributions to the intellectual and logistical work of the conference.

Notes

1. Early and influential authors of this literature include Liisa Malkki and Giorgio Agamben. They, in turn, draw from previous critiques of humanitarianism, especially Hannah Arendt's chapter on refugees and “the Rights of Man” in The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951).

2. I develop these points further in previous publications, highlighting the significance of Liisa Malkki's work for studying southern Africa’s exile history while developing a critique of it through my own research. See especially Williams (2012).
